NAUI Board Of Directors Election

2017 NAUI Board of Directors Election Results

NAUI Worldwide remains a true membership association. Our standards, policies and ethics are governed by the Association’s Board of Directors, who are members themselves. The Board of Directors are elected through a democratic election process — each eligible member gets a vote in his or her association.

This year’s voting was again performed online, with paper ballots available upon request. The third-party host website Votenet (eBallot) was provided with the candidates’ information, biosketch and answers to common questions posed to all of the candidates. During the voting period, members accessed an eBallot through Votenet to cast their votes.

A total of 7,585 NAUI members were eligible to vote in the 2017 Board of Directors election. A total of 1,311 members cast ballots.

The tally of votes in the election was:

Michael Feld 755
Barry Moore 742

A total of 154 votes were tallied among 53 write-ins.

2017 NAUI Ballot - Proposition #1

On August 8, 2017, the NAUI Board of Directors approved a recommendation to amend Article II - Membership of the NAUI Bylaws to create a new class of membership, NAUI Freediving Instructor as follows:

Article II – Membership, Section 2 – Voting Members.

Add new sub-section:

C. Freediving Instructors. These are members who have attained the certification status of Freediving Instructor by completing the requirements established by the NAUI BOD to enable them to issue various levels of freediving certification as may be provided by the Association.

(i) Active status freediving instructors are freediving instructor members who have attained the certification status of freediving instructor, and meet the requirements to issue certifications as established by the NAUI BOD.

(ii.) Sustaining status freediving instructors are freediving instructor members who have attained the certification status of freediving instructor, but do not currently meet the requirements to issue certifications as established by the NAUI BOD.

Explanation: Freediving is a rapidly growing and evolving sector in the diving industry that includes divers who exclusively rely on breath-hold techniques. NAUI Instructors must demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of scuba diving equipment and, based on additional qualifications, may request authorization to teach NAUI freediving courses. Creation of a Freediving Instructor membership allows qualified individuals to join the Association as a NAUI Freediving Instructor without the requirement to demonstrate mastery of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA).

Ballot Proposal: Shall the NAUI Bylaws, Article II – Membership, Section 2 – Voting Members be amended to add Freediving Instructor as a new membership type in the National Association of Underwater Instructors?
